Estonian Defence Forces bolster logistics with new Scania hook-lift vehicles

By Defence Industry Europe

The Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI) has announced the addition of new hook-lift vehicles to the military fleet. This upgrade aims to improve logistical operations, enhance tactical readiness, and ensure the efficient handling of supplies.

The fleet will include Scania G360 and Scania G410 vehicles, known for their versatility and durability. Equipped with advanced hook-lift systems, these vehicles can efficiently transport standard ISO containers and various cargo platforms.

“Hook-lift vehicles help ensure the timely delivery of supplies during both peacetime and crisis situations, even in challenging terrains,” said Erko Sepri, Strategic Category Manager for Vehicles, Machinery, and Logistics at ECDI. “This procurement is part of the strategy to develop the military vehicle fleet, aimed at updating and enhancing our hauling capabilities. Ultimately, the Estonian Defence Forces will have top-level technology that meets their needs.”

The Scania G360 models, available in 8×4 and 6×4 drivetrain configurations, are designed for diverse transport and supply tasks. Meanwhile, the Scania G410 vehicles, featuring an 8×8 drivetrain, are tailored for off-road conditions, making them ideal for combat scenarios requiring the transport of heavy loads.

Major Raigo Puusepp, Chief Technician of the Defence Forces, highlighted the vehicles’ strategic importance. “The hook-lift system primarily allows for the rapid and effective use of various cargo handling tools across all units,” he said. “Thanks to the new vehicles, large quantities of heavy-caliber ammunition required by modern self-propelled howitzers can be handled quickly. This capability is also crucial for the rapid deployment of new systems and for aligning the Defence Forces’ logistics chain with civilian logistics chains.”

Additional vehicles, both for logistical and tactical purposes, will be delivered over the coming year. These vehicles will support road-based and off-road operations, strengthening the Defence Forces’ adaptability in diverse environments.

In addition to Scania Eesti, suppliers for this initiative include Veho Estonia and Volvo Defense. The overall framework agreement, valued at approximately €693 million, facilitates the acquisition of vehicles for multiple institutions. Beneficiaries include the Estonian Defence Forces, the National Guard, the Police and Border Guard Board, and subsidiary institutions of the Latvian Ministry of Defence.
