The funding will help the LAF redeploy to secure and maintain stability in this volatile region, contributing to the protection of civilian populations. Additionally, it will strengthen their operational capabilities to support national and regional security, creating conditions for displaced civilians on both sides of the border to return home safely.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, described the measure as a vital step in bolstering the LAF’s role during a critical period for the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire. “The LAF are essential to regional and domestic stability and deserve all our support in performing their critical mission,” she said. Kallas reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to strengthening Lebanese institutions and renewing its partnership with Lebanon.
The assistance aligns with the 60-day ceasefire agreement of 27 November 2024, supporting the LAF’s planned redeployment to the South of Litani Sector. This deployment is key to implementing UNSCR 1701 and fostering a lasting ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel. Alongside UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon), the LAF are integral to maintaining security and stability in the region.
The European Peace Facility, established in March 2021, enables the EU to finance actions under its Common Foreign and Security Policy. Its goal is to prevent conflicts, preserve peace, and strengthen international security by supporting military and defence capacities in third states and international organisations. The latest measure reaffirms the EU’s commitment to using this instrument for stability in the Middle East.
