Fincantieri successfully tests Lithium-Ion Battery System for U212 NFS submarines

By Defence Industry Europe

Fincantieri, through its subsidiary POWER4FUTURE, has successfully completed final operational tests of a new Lithium-Ion Battery System (LBS) for the U212 Near Future Submarines (NFS) of the Italian Navy. The tests, conducted at the Piedimonte San Germano shipyard, marked a significant milestone for the U212 NFS programme, showcasing Italian innovation in submarine technology.

For the first time, a complete Lithium-Ion battery system designed and manufactured entirely in Italy was powered up and tested. The system includes six battery modules and an energy management conversion device. Tests simulated real operating conditions, confirming the system’s functionality during charging and discharging phases while monitoring critical parameters such as voltage, current, and temperature.

The success of these tests highlights the collaboration between OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation), NAVARM (Naval Armaments Directorate), and Fincantieri, along with leading industrial partners like POWER4FUTURE and FIB S.p.A., a subsidiary of the SERI Industrial Group. This partnership is a cornerstone of the Italian Navy’s submarine modernisation programme, which also features a state-of-the-art laboratory at the POWER4FUTURE plant for training technical personnel and crews.
