The AARGM-ER missile is an advanced anti-radiation homing weapon specifically designed to target and neutralise enemy radar installations. Its integration will enhance the operational flexibility and effectiveness of Finland’s new fleet of 64 Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II aircraft, replacing the retiring F/A-18 Hornet’s capabilities. The procurement includes not only the missiles but also training services, logistical support, dimensional-mass mock-ups, spare parts, and essential technical documentation, ensuring the Finnish Defence Forces have the necessary resources for smooth integration and sustained operation.
This acquisition makes Finland one of the first countries outside the United States to receive the AGM-88G AARGM-ER missiles, highlighting its strategic alignment with NATO allies who are similarly enhancing their capabilities with this system. Poland and the Netherlands recently received approval from the U.S. Department of State for their respective potential AARGM-ER purchases, though neither has yet signed an agreement. Poland has been approved for the acquisition of 360 AARGM-ER missiles, valued at approximately USD 1.275 billion, while the Netherlands’ approval includes 265 missiles in a potential USD 700 million deal. Both packages, like Finland’s, include extensive logistical and training support to ensure effective deployment and usage.
According to Colonel (ret.) Henrik Elo, Director of Finland’s F-35 Programme, the AARGM-ER missiles “significantly expand the mission profile of our Air Force, enhancing the F-35’s ability to support Army and Navy operations and protect critical societal assets.” The acquisition underscores Finland’s commitment to strengthening its national defence capabilities and reinforces its alignment with allied defence strategies to counter evolving security threats.
The delivery of the AGM-88G AARGM-ER missiles will proceed in coordination with the introduction of Finland’s F-35A jets, ensuring readiness and operational effectiveness for the Finnish Air Force through 2031.
