Finnish Defence Forces procure advanced night vision goggles from Senop

By Defence Industry Europe

The Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) have placed a EUR 19.9 million order with Finnish defence company Senop for advanced night vision goggles. The procurement, excluding VAT, is expected to significantly bolster employment in Finland and will be delivered to the Finnish Army by the end of 2025.

This order builds on a framework agreement signed last year between the Swedish and Finnish military procurement agencies. The agreement provides a streamlined and cost-effective approach to acquiring advanced military optronic capabilities for both nations.

Night vision technology plays a crucial role in enabling military operations in all visibility conditions. “The equipment used in combat conditions must be durable, high-performance, and lightweight,” said Aki Korhonen, President of Senop Oy. He added that ergonomics and ease of use are also essential considerations in the development process.

The new night vision goggles, known by the FDF as VV M25, are based on the Senop EVA M system. This compact device has been designed for individual soldiers to enhance mobility during low-light combat. Building on the first-generation EVA system delivered between 2019 and 2024, the updated model incorporates enhanced features based on feedback from end users. “The importance of feedback from the field is priceless for product development,” noted Erkki Tarvainen, Senop’s Director of R&D Projects.

Manufactured entirely in Finland, the goggles utilise cutting-edge aspherical and composite technology. This approach ensures high performance while maintaining a compact size and lightweight design, addressing the critical needs of soldiers in combat.

Senop highlighted the procurement as an example of successful collaboration to strengthen national security and improve military optronics. “We are very proud to support the Defence Forces’ infantry night combat capability,” said Korhonen. “This cooperation showcases how to efficiently enhance national security of supply and develop equipment that meets the needs of soldiers operating in all visibility conditions.”
