France replaces artillery donated to Ukraine with new CAESAR howitzers

By Defence Industry Europe

On November 30, the French General Directorate of Armaments (DGA) has announced the delivery of six CAESAR Mk1 (6x6) artillery systems to the French Army, fulfilling its equipment plans for 2023. This replenishment comes in the wake of France's substantial military support to Ukraine, where 18 CAESAR artillery systems were sent from French military stock.

Nexter, a company of KNDS, the manufacturer of the CAESAR systems, has ramped up production capabilities, enabling the French Army to rapidly replace the donated artillery. Initially, France committed to replacing six howitzers by the end of the current year, with the rest expected to be delivered over the next 12 months.

Ukraine has not only received the 18 units from French military stocks but has also placed an order for an additional 18 (12 + 6) CAESAR systems directly from Nexter. This increased order volume has prompted Nexter to optimize its production processes, reducing the build time for each CAESAR unit from 30 to 15 months.
