The trial took place at the Republic of Korea Army’s 513th Aviation Battalion and the Seungjin Training Field in Pocheon-si, north of Seoul. It was conducted during the Defense Drone Technology Exhibition to test Mojave’s ability to operate without relying on a conventional runway throughout its mission.
Pilots at ground control stations launched the aircraft from the aviation battalion’s runway and flew it to the training area. Mojave joined air operations, landed on a rough maneuver trail, took off again and returned to its original base.
The aircraft carried dual weapon rails and inert payloads during the demonstration. General Atomics said the mission showed how short takeoff and landing capability could improve operational flexibility, survivability and response times for future South Korean defense applications.
“This demonstration showcased Mojave’s ability to perform tactical missions that are representative of real battlefield requirements and challenges,” said GA-ASI Chief Executive Linden Blue. “Whether the user needs contested and austere battlefield operations, ISR, weapons delivery, Air-Launched Effects deployment, troop resupply, counter-UAS, or missions requiring short and unimproved roads for takeoff, our aircraft answer the bell.”
In a combat scenario, troops could have refueled and rearmed Mojave while it was on the ground at the range before sending it back into operation. GA-ASI said no other aircraft with Mojave’s endurance, range and payload could perform the same maneuver.
The demonstration also advances a partnership formed by General Atomics and Hanwha in 2025 to co-develop and co-produce uncrewed aircraft with short-field capability. The companies are targeting customers including South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense, the U.S. Department of War and other international buyers.
“This demonstration marks an important milestone in delivering tangible results through the partnership between Hanwha and GA-ASI,” said Buhwan Lee, chief executive nominee of Hanwha Aerospace. “Going forward, we will work closely with the ROK defense industry to develop unmanned systems designed for future operating environments and expand our presence in global markets.”
A critical design review for the production Mojave STOL is expected in November, with the first flight planned for 2027. South Korean suppliers are expected to contribute to the aircraft’s production under the partnership.
The Mojave demonstrator is scheduled to be displayed at Hanwha’s Industry Day in Changwon on Sept. 21. The event will include South Korean suppliers involved in the planned production program.
