Germany signs contract for three P-8A Poseidon maritime reconnaissance aircraft

By Defence Industry Europe

The German Navy is set to bolster its maritime capabilities with the addition of three new Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft, specialized in long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare. This expansion, funded by the special assets of the Bundeswehr, follows the signing of a supplementary contract to the five P8-A Poseidon systems already ordered.

Annette Lehnigk-Emden, President of the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), finalized the contract on November 21.

This contract is based on a government purchase agreement with the USA (Foreign Military Sales procedure) for the initial acquisition of five aircraft, a simulator for training purposes, and all necessary support services for operational readiness.

With the addition of these three aircraft, the German Navy will ensure sustained capability as part of the country’s defense transformation. The enhanced fleet size will enable naval aviators to deploy long-range maritime reconnaissance and submarine hunting capabilities for national and alliance defense, as well as crisis management missions globally.

The newly commissioned aircraft are scheduled for production by Boeing in the years 2026 and 2027, and will then be delivered to the German Navy. The procurement value for this project amounts to approximately 1.1 billion euros.

This strategic enhancement of the German Navy’s fleet with the latest P-8A Poseidon aircraft represents a significant step in strengthening Germany’s maritime defense and operational readiness in response to evolving global security challenges.
