Historic moment for FREMM programme: tenth frigate for Italian Navy launched

By Defence Industry Europe

The Italian Navy’s tenth FREMM (Fregata Europea Multi-Missione) frigate, named "Emilio Bianchi," has been successfully launched at the Fincantieri shipyard in Riva Trigoso. The ceremony, which marked a significant milestone in the ongoing Italian-French naval collaboration, was attended by several high-profile dignitaries including Fincantieri’s Chairman Claudio Graziano, CEO and Managing Director Pierroberto Folgiero, OCCAR-EA Director Mr. Joachim Sucker, and Chief of the Italian Navy Admiral Enrico Credendino.

This event represents another achievement for the OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement) FREMM Programme, which operates within the framework of a joint Italian-French cooperation. The programme is supervised by the OCCAR-EA FREMM SMs and the Italian Naval Directorate (NAVARM), ensuring swift progress as the ninth and tenth frigates are scheduled for delivery to the Italian Navy in 2025.

Named after Emilio Bianchi, a World War II Italian military frogman and recipient of the military gallantry medal, the tenth frigate was honored by the presence of Mrs. Elisabetta Bianchi, his daughter, as the godmother of the ceremony.

The “Emilio Bianchi” frigate has been launched with its combat system and platform equipment fully installed and integrated. It is set to be transferred to the Fincantieri shipyard in Muggiano (La Spezia) for further outfitting, with the First Sea Going scheduled for the last quarter of 2024. The frigate will be officially delivered to the Italian Navy in the third quarter of 2025.

The “Emilio Bianchi” is an ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) enhanced version of the FREMM frigate, reflecting the advanced capabilities and strategic importance of the vessel within the Italian fleet. The early and successful launch underscores the effectiveness of OCCAR’s management approach, which seamlessly handles technical, design, and construction challenges through continuous cooperation with French and Italian Naval Directorates.

To date, OCCAR-EA has delivered eight FREMM ships to both the French and Italian navies, with the Italian Navy expecting its final two ships by 2025. OCCAR-EA also manages the Warship In-Service Support (ISS) for the entire Italian FREMM fleet, ensuring operational readiness and sustainability.
