Italy signs EUR 280 million deal for Rheinmetall’s Skynex air defence systems

By Defence Industry Europe

The Italian Army has chosen Rheinmetall’s Skynex air defence system to strengthen its national defence infrastructure. Rheinmetall Italia S.p.A., headquartered in Rome, has secured the initial contract worth EUR 73 million to deliver the first system, with an option to supply three additional systems valued at EUR 204 million. If exercised, the total value of the deal would reach nearly EUR 280 million.

Skynex is a state-of-the-art, cannon-based air defence system designed to neutralise a variety of airborne threats, including missiles, artillery, drones, and loitering munitions. Each system features an air surveillance sensor and tracking unit, a central command-and-control station, and four 35mm Revolver Gun Mk3 firing units. These guns have a firing rate of 1,000 rounds per minute, a range of up to four kilometres, and employ advanced programmable Ahead ammunition that resists electronic countermeasures.

Delivery of the pilot Skynex system is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2026. Should Italy exercise its option for the additional three systems, contractual arrangements would likely be finalised by 2027. The agreement also includes the provision of training, maintenance services, spare parts, and ammunition to ensure effective deployment and ongoing operational support.

Italy becomes the first NATO member state to adopt the Skynex system, which includes the Revolver Gun Mk3. This decision reinforces Rheinmetall’s efforts to establish its technology as a global standard for cannon-based air defence. The Skynex system has already proven effective in Ukraine, successfully defending against threats such as drones and cruise missiles under real combat conditions.

Rheinmetall’s modular Skynex system is built for flexibility, allowing integration with various sensors and effectors, including existing air defence solutions like Rheinmetall’s Skyshield and Skyguard. The Italian configuration will feature the XTAR 3D radar, capable of monitoring airspace within a 50-kilometre radius, providing comprehensive surveillance capabilities.

In addition to air defence, Rheinmetall has a strong presence in Italy’s defence sector, generating approximately €1 billion annually through its three subsidiaries and employing around 1,500 people across five locations. Together with its partner Leonardo, Rheinmetall is poised for major contracts to supply the Italian armed forces with advanced combat vehicles, including the Italian main battle tank and the Lynx Armoured Infantry Combat System.
