KEF Robotics and FlyFocus partner to deliver GPS-denied navigation for UAS operations in Europe

By Defence Industry Europe

KEF Robotics, a leader in vision-based navigation systems, has been awarded a contract with FlyFocus, a prominent Polish company known for its expertise in custom aircraft manufacturing. This collaboration aims to deliver advanced GPS-denied navigation solutions for FlyFocus’s unmanned aerial systems (UAS), specifically targeting Group 3 (US) and Group 2 (NATO) classifications for operations in contested environments.

The project is set to commence in November 2024, reflecting the growing demand for resilient and autonomous navigation systems within the defence sector. The partnership underscores KEF Robotics’ expanding presence in Europe, particularly after the recent establishment of its office in Oslo, Norway.

“FlyFocus’s innovative approach to aircraft design aligns with our mission to push the boundaries of navigation performance in denied environments,” stated Fraser Kitchell, Co-founder and CEO of KEF Robotics. He emphasised that the partnership marks a significant step in the company’s European strategy and highlights its commitment to advancing navigation technologies.

FlyFocus brings a wealth of expertise to the collaboration, with its specialisation in designing aircraft for NATO and allied operations. By leveraging KEF Robotics’ cutting-edge technology, the partnership aims to enhance UAS performance in scenarios where traditional GPS navigation tools may be compromised.

KEF’s proprietary Tailwind technology is at the heart of the initiative, enabling unmanned systems to navigate effectively in dynamic and challenging environments. This capability is expected to support FlyFocus in developing UAS that can operate reliably in missions requiring navigation in complex and contested areas.

“KEF’s Tailwind technology will enable our aircraft to meet the needs of our most demanding customers and end users,” said Julian Zyromski, Vice President of FlyFocus. He noted the importance of addressing today’s navigation challenges while preparing for the future, highlighting the strategic importance of the collaboration.
