Latvia orders Saab’s RBS 70 NG air defence system in EUR 180 million deal

By Defence Industry Europe

Swedish defence firm Saab has signed a framework agreement with the Latvian Ministry of Defence for the delivery of its RBS 70 NG short-range ground-based air defence system. An initial order worth 2.1 billion Swedish kronor (approximately EUR 180 million) has been placed under the agreement, with deliveries scheduled between 2026 and 2030.

The contract includes RBS 70 NG firing units, missiles, and training equipment to strengthen Latvia’s air defence capabilities. Saab stated that the system will provide the Latvian Armed Forces with enhanced protection against a range of aerial threats.

“Saab continues to support the Latvian National Armed Forces with a strong ground-based air defence capability which will significantly enhance its crucial ability to detect and engage aerial threats,” said Görgen Johansson, head of Saab’s business area Dynamics. This deal is part of Latvia’s broader efforts to bolster its defence in response to evolving regional security challenges.

The RBS 70 NG is equipped with an automatic target tracker and a built-in night sight, allowing for accurate operation in various conditions. It is capable of neutralising threats such as drones, aircraft, and missiles at ranges of up to nine kilometres.

This latest agreement builds on Saab’s ongoing cooperation with NATO members and partners in enhancing national defence across Europe. The RBS 70 NG system is already in service with multiple countries, contributing to integrated air defence networks.
