Lockheed Martin and Aerostar open S-70 Black Hawk MRO centre in Romania

By Defence Industry Europe

Lockheed Martin, in partnership with Romania's Aerostar, has inaugurated Europe's first certified maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) service centre for S-70 Black Hawk helicopters in Bacau, Romania. This new facility aims to enhance operational readiness and reduce costs for the S-70 Black Hawks operated by Romania's interior ministry, while also creating high-skilled jobs in the region.

Ray Piselli, Lockheed Martin’s VP of International Business, highlighted the strategic significance of this partnership, particularly if Romania chooses the Black Hawk for military purposes, and the potential expansion into supporting land systems.

The first four S-70 Black Hawks were delivered to Romania in November 2023, with two more expected by year’s end, under a €269 million contract signed in 2021 for up to 12 helicopters.

These Black Hawks, built at Lockheed Martin’s PZL Mielec facility in Poland, will serve in various missions, including search and rescue, firefighting, and medical support.

Aerostar, known for its expertise in military aircraft maintenance and upgrades, was also appointed in 2020 as a maintenance service provider for Romania’s F-16 fighter jets.
