Lockheed Martin increases production of missile systems amid growing global demand

By Defence Industry Europe

Lockheed Martin, the world's leading producer of advanced weapon systems, is significantly increasing its production capabilities for various missile systems. This expansion is in response to the escalating global demand for defence solutions.

“Lockheed Martin remains committed to evolving at the speed of innovation and helping our customers outpace threats when every second counts,” the company said.

The American defence giant is on track to boost the manufacturing of its weaponry systems, including the renowned HIMARS. Production capacities have already escalated from 48 to 60 units annually, with a goal to reach 96 units by the end of 2024. This increase underscores Lockheed Martin’s commitment to meeting the rising international need for advanced artillery systems.

In addition to HIMARS, Lockheed Martin has upped the production of anti-tank Javelin missiles to 2,400 units per year. The company aims to further expand this capacity to nearly 4,000 units annually by 2026. However, with over 10,000 units already supplied to Ukraine, replenishing US stockpiles is anticipated to take several years.

The production of Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles is also set to reach an ambitious target of 14,000 units per year by 2025. The first units of this missile type are expected to come off the production line in Australia within the same timeframe. GMLRS, the primary ammunition for HIMARS with a range of 85 km and guided by INS/GPS, has been actively used in Ukraine. Lockheed Martin plans to introduce an enhanced version, the GMLRS-ER, with a range of over 150 km.

Additionally, Lockheed Martin has secured funding to increase the annual production of PAC-3 MSE missiles, the PATRIOT air defence system interceptors, to 650 units by 2027. This move is part of a broader strategy to bolster global defence capabilities in an increasingly tense international environment.

The expansion of Lockheed Martin’s production capabilities for HIMARS, Javelin, GMLRS, and PAC-3 MSE missiles reflects the company’s dedication to supporting global defence and security needs.
