HIMARS FLEX is intended to expand mission capability while retaining the precision and deterrence associated with HIMARS. Lockheed Martin described it as a new benchmark for offensive and defensive fires.
The company said HIMARS FLEX builds on the combat-proven record of HIMARS. It said the launcher family has accumulated more than 2.5 million operating hours worldwide.
HIMARS FLEX is designed to share munitions with NATO stockpiles. These include GMLRS, ER GMLRS, PrSM, ATACMS and PAC-3.
The system can also integrate into joint-fire-control networks. Lockheed Martin said this can create a deterrence multiplier while keeping the launcher C-130 transportable on the XM1140 chassis.
The modular loadout allows dual-pod configurations. Lockheed Martin said these can carry double the offensive firepower and can also be configured for air and missile defence munitions such as PAC-3, IFPC and future options.
The company said the system is intended for both new and existing customers. Built-in modularity allows partners to adopt FLEXFires technology according to their operational needs.
Configuration options include a single-pod baseline, dual-pod FLEX loadout and multiple platform options, including mobile and containerised versions. Lockheed Martin said autonomy can also be added.
The company said the approach is intended to reduce training and sustainment costs. It also preserves the ability to adapt the system to regional requirements.
“HIMARS FLEX will be a game changer in the future of offensive and defensive fires,” said Tim Cahill, president, Lockheed Martin Missiles & Fire Control. “Our FLEXFires technology suite will let operators scale loadout and add autonomous capabilities without sacrificing speed or accuracy.”
Lockheed Martin said HIMARS FLEX retains the shoot-and-scoot characteristics of the original launcher. The company said increased munition loadout, rapid reloading and optional autonomy support distributed and survivable fires in contested environments.
The company said these features can complicate adversary targeting and strengthen deterrence. HIMARS FLEX is designed to support coalition forces operating across dispersed locations.
“Flexibility, interoperability and proven performance are the three pillars defining today’s most effective deterrent capabilities,” said Gaylia Campbell, vice president and general manager, Lockheed Martin Tactical Missiles. “HIMARS FLEX brings our allies the ability to tailor offensive and defensive firepower to their specific needs while staying connected to a common, battle-proven ecosystem.”
Lockheed Martin said HIMARS FLEX is modernised for mission flexibility through expanded munition and autonomy options. The company said the system is intended to support precision, mobility and NATO-compatible interoperability.
The company said HIMARS FLEX will help shape the future of allied artillery and air defence. It said the system is designed to provide rapid and accurate fires and protection where needed.
