Korea Aviation Engineering & Maintenance Service, a subsidiary of Korea Aerospace Industries, will fit the aircraft with mission equipment in South Korea. The contract also covers additional special mission equipment, spare parts and on-site technical support.
The S-92A+ has upgraded engines and a new Phase IV main gearbox. The changes give the aircraft capacity to carry more fuel or a heavier payload, depending on the mission.
“We are deeply honored that the S-92A+ has been selected as the Republic of Korea’s presidential helicopter,” said Wonik Lee, Lockheed Martin’s South Korea country executive. “Building on the Republic of Korea Air Force’s long-term experience operating the S-92A, we are confident the S-92A+ will continue supporting this critical mission with the highest standards of safety and reliability.”
Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, is increasing S-92A+ production at its facilities in Stratford, Connecticut, and Owego, New York. The company says it has capacity to build up to 12 aircraft a year.
The S-92 also serves as the basis for the U.S. Marine Corps’ VH-92A Patriot presidential helicopter. In South Korea, the type has been used by the Coast Guard for search and rescue and by the National Fire Agency for firefighting and rescue missions.
