Navantia completes installation of hydrogen propulsion system AIP in S-80-class submarine

By Defence Industry Europe

Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has announced the successful installation of its Hydrogen-based Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP) into an S-80 class submarine. This marks the first deployment of a third-generation AIP system in any submarine, underscoring a major milestone in Spanish naval engineering.

The achievement was celebrated at Navantia’s Cartagena shipyard in the presence of Spanish National Armament Director, Admiral Aniceto Rosique Nieto. The innovative technology significantly enhances the operational capabilities of the Spanish Navy, allowing its submarines to remain submerged for extended periods, a notable improvement over conventional diesel-electric models.

Navantia’s AIP system, commercially branded as BEST (Bio-Ethanol Stealth Technology), represents a state-of-the-art solution in underwater propulsion. It enables submarines to recharge their batteries while remaining submerged, avoiding the need for detectable snorkelling manoeuvres and reducing vulnerability.

The system operates through a bioethanol reforming process, which converts renewable organic feedstock into a Hydrogen-rich stream. This is combined with pure Oxygen to power a fuel cell, generating electrical energy silently and efficiently. Unlike other systems in use worldwide, Navantia’s AIP does not require stored Hydrogen, instead producing it on demand, offering increased safety and tactical flexibility.

“This development positions Navantia as a leader in international submarine construction,” said a company spokesperson. The system’s advanced features enhance strategic autonomy, crew safety, and operational efficiency, while its extensive onboard sensorisation reduces personnel requirements.

Attendees at the milestone event had the opportunity to inspect Section 3 of the S-83 Cosme García submarine, which houses the AIP equipment. This includes liquid oxygen and bioethanol tanks, as well as auxiliary systems critical to its operation. Visitors observed the meticulous procedures and safety protocols underpinning the construction process, showcasing Navantia’s commitment to excellence.
