Northrop Grumman advances LITENING targeting pods for U.S. Marine Corps

By Defence Industry Europe

Northrop Grumman has been selected by the U.S. Marine Corps to integrate Advanced Tactical Data Links (ATDL) into its LITENING electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) targeting pods on F/A-18 aircraft. This technological advancement promises to significantly improve data transfer speeds and decision-making capabilities for critical missions.

The ATDL technology represents a leap forward by incorporating the Bandwidth Efficient Common Data Link (BE-CDL) waveform. This is the first instance of a tactical aircraft data link employing this advanced waveform, allowing faster, more secure communication of video, images, and metadata between air and ground operators.

James Conroy, vice president of navigation, targeting, and survivability at Northrop Grumman, highlighted the significance of this development: “LITENING’s high-definition sensors on the advanced EO/IR targeting pod gather critical information, enabling more rapid decision making. The ATDL enhancement is like upgrading to better Wi-Fi by building on LITENING’s already proven data links, making live feeds immediately available on the ground – a critical capability in our modern environment.”

The ATDL serves as a replacement for the older Plug-and-Play II data link and can be retrofitted onto all fourth-generation or newer LITENING pod models. This includes the G4, SE, LDP, Colour, and Large Aperture variants. Featuring an updated processor, software-defined radio, wideband antenna, and improved data recorder, the ATDL enhances the pod’s ability to transmit high-definition video and imagery in real-time.

The LITENING pod, an EO/IR targeting system, detects, identifies, and tracks targets at extended ranges. It supports a diverse range of missions such as precision targeting, air superiority, close air support, and surveillance. With a modular design, the pod is equipped to evolve with future mission requirements, ensuring long-term effectiveness.

The ATDL integration builds upon Northrop Grumman’s established legacy of secure data link technologies. Previous integrations include NET-T, which functions as a secure airborne Wi-Fi router, and Mobile Ad-hoc Network and Freedom 550 radios, which connect users across different aircraft generations and operational domains.

Northrop Grumman has already delivered over 900 LITENING pods to U.S. and international customers.
