Poland and Germany have announced the formation of a new coalition aimed at supplying armored vehicles to Ukraine. This announcement was made by Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz following discussions with his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius.

The coalition, dubbed the ‘tank coalition,’ marks a pivotal moment in international defence collaboration, with the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Italy also applying to join this initiative. “This will be one of the most important coalitions to have been created,” stated Kosiniak-Kamysz, emphasizing the coalition’s critical role in bolstering Ukraine’s defence capabilities amidst ongoing war.

The ‘tank coalition’ emerges as a concrete step towards strengthening Ukraine’s ties with NATO and enhancing its military readiness. This initiative is part of a broader effort to form capability coalition groups that have been actively supplying Ukraine with various military technologies since the onset of the war, aiming to counter the illegal invasion from Russia.

This collaboration gains additional significance as Poland and Germany prepare to assume responsibility for the European Union’s Rapid Response Forces, with each nation readying 2,500 troops for swift deployment and reaction. The Armoured Capability Coalition is expected to play a crucial role in this context, though specific details of its activities remain under development.

Kosiniak-Kamysz also expressed his gratitude towards Minister Boris Pistorius for his contributions to the NATO Ukraine Training and Education Centre, highlighting Germany’s ongoing support, which includes the delivery of numerous armoured combat vehicles to Ukraine. Germany’s total contributions to Ukraine’s defence efforts have reached approximately EUR 5.2 billion, with recent commitments including the delivery of 100 protected infantry fighting vehicles and 100 other transport vehicles.
