Rheinmetall Expal Munitions reaches 450,000 annual output of 155mm shells

Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger has announced an increase in artillery ammunition production at the company’s Spanish subsidiary, Rheinmetall Expal Munitions. The move responds to the heavy ammunition consumption caused by the war in Ukraine and the need to replenish NATO stockpiles.

According to Papperger, the Spanish division has now reached an annual production rate of 450,000 rounds of 155mm ammunition. He attributed this capacity to investments made over recent years.

Rheinmetall Expal Munitions currently operates six production sites located in Trubia, Páramo de Masa, Navalmoral, El Gordo, Albacete, and Javalí Viejo. Its main product is the 155mm M107 shell, which is valued for its low cost but offers lower performance compared to modern ammunition types.

The M107, first introduced into Western artillery in the late 1950s, has limitations in terms of explosive payload and range. Despite this, its affordability continues to make it a widely produced and supplied option.
