Rheinmetall to supply C-390 flight simulators to the Royal Netherlands Air Force

By Defence Industry Europe

Rheinmetall has received a contract from Embraer to supply advanced C-390 flight simulators to the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The agreement includes a Full Flight and Mission Simulator (FFMS) and a Cargo Handling Station Trainer (CHST), with delivery expected by the end of 2026.

The FFMS meets the Level D standard, the highest international qualification level for flight simulators. It enables aircrew training under both normal and emergency conditions, supports military mission rehearsals, and simulates over 350 possible aircraft malfunctions.

The CHST is designed to train flight crews, loadmasters, and ground personnel in cargo handling procedures. It features advanced visual display technology, providing both an interior view of the cargo compartment and an external perspective of the aircraft.

This contract marks Rheinmetall’s third major order for C-390 simulators worldwide and its second in Europe. The Portuguese Air Force and Embraer have previously acquired the FFMS, highlighting its growing adoption.

The Embraer C-390 transport aircraft, which first flew in 2015, is already in service or being introduced in multiple countries, including Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, Austria, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and South Korea. With the increasing number of European C-390 customers, Embraer and Rheinmetall are exploring the possibility of establishing a dedicated C-390 training centre in Europe.

Currently, C-390 crew training takes place at an Embraer facility in São Paulo, Brazil, where Brazilian, Portuguese, and Hungarian personnel undergo instruction. A European training centre would enhance accessibility and support for existing and future C-390 operators in the region.
