Romania joins NATO Modular Ground-Based Air Defence Support Partnership

By Defence Industry Europe

The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has announced the inclusion of Romania as the 11th member of the Modular Ground-Based Air Defence (Mod.GBAD) Support Partnership. This move marks a significant expansion of the project aimed at advancing modern Ground-Based Air Defence systems within the NATO framework.

Between 6 and 8 May 2025, the Netherlands hosted the 5th meetings of the Mod.GBAD Steering Board (SB) and Support Partnership Committee (SPC). The gathering served as a platform for the project’s participating nations to discuss the ongoing development of Ground-Based Air Defence capabilities.

The Mod.GBAD Support Partnership is a key element of NATO’s High Visibility Project. It focuses on creating the concept stage for state-of-the-art air defence systems while establishing a robust framework for multinational acquisition and cooperation.

The meetings saw participation from several NATO Allies who attended as observers, reflecting the project’s increasing strategic importance and growing interest within the Alliance. The involvement of various member states highlights the multinational commitment to strengthening NATO’s air defence capabilities.

NSPA has a well-established role in supporting Romanian Air Defence Systems throughout their lifecycle. Romania’s accession to the Mod.GBAD initiative further enhances NSPA’s capabilities in fostering multinational acquisition, interoperability, and commonality within NATO’s defence projects.

Romania’s participation also signals the country’s dedication to collaborative defence initiatives within the NATO structure. This step demonstrates Romania’s commitment to strengthening its air defence infrastructure through modernisation and integration with other allied nations.

The NSPA’s support for Romania’s defence systems and its active engagement in the Mod.GBAD project underscore the agency’s pivotal role in facilitating joint procurement and sustainable defence solutions. As more nations show interest in the partnership, NSPA continues to advance NATO’s collective air defence capabilities.
