Saab secures major order from Sweden for lightweight torpedoes and tubes

By Defence Industry Europe

Swedish defence company Saab has announced that it has secured an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the delivery of its Saab Lightweight Torpedoes (SLWT) and associated torpedo tubes. The order is valued at approximately SEK 1.3 billion, with deliveries set to commence in 2026.

The Saab Lightweight Torpedo, designated as Torped 47 by the Swedish Armed Forces, represents Sweden’s new generation of lightweight torpedo systems. This state-of-the-art weapon system is intended to bolster Sweden’s naval defence capabilities, primarily for deployment from submarines and surface ships, while also being prepared for integration on helicopters.

This recent contract marks the second order from Sweden for the SLWT, following the initial deliveries to FMV that began in 2022. The Torped 47 is specifically designed to function effectively within the challenging environment of the Baltic Sea, characterised by shallow waters, complex topography, and a diverse seabed. These conditions necessitate advanced capabilities for locating and identifying submarines, as well as robust navigation and communication functions.

This state-of-the-art system is providing the Swedish Armed Forces with increased capabilities, including torpedoes, spare parts, training systems, and technical support.”

Saab’s continuous innovation in underwater weaponry reflects its strategic role in strengthening Sweden’s maritime security. The Torped 47 is not only a technical advancement but also a vital component in ensuring the defence of the Baltic Sea region.
