The SR20 completed a dedicated period of water trials last month, which formed a crucial part of its verification and validation process. This phase was designed to test the vehicle against its specifications, assess performance, and evaluate the overall system’s resilience. During these tests, the SR20 demonstrated exceptional manoeuvrability and precision, showcasing its capabilities through both manual joystick control and automated operations.
These successful trials now set the stage for the next step in the SR20’s journey: sea trials scheduled for spring 2025. The advanced testing underscores Saab UK’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of eco-responsible technology and efficiency in marine robotics.
Andy Fraser, Managing Director at Saab UK, expressed his enthusiasm for the milestone. “The SR20 going to water trials is a huge milestone in Saab UK’s journey to take electric ROV capabilities to the next level, focusing on eco-responsibility and greater efficiency. We’re thrilled that the trials were a success and I look forward to seeing what the next step is for this ground-breaking vehicle,” he said.
The SR20 is designed as a work-class underwater vehicle that prioritises operational versatility, supporting concepts like resident deployment and over-the-horizon control. As an all-electric vehicle, it minimises environmental impact by using limited oil, distinguishing itself with superior thrust, efficient electric manipulators, and overall enhanced performance compared to traditional hydraulic systems.
Ocean Infinity, known for its innovative approach to uncrewed robotic vessel operations, is the launch customer for the SR20. Their use of this pioneering technology exemplifies a move towards transforming maritime operations with advanced, sustainable solutions.
