South Korea begins production of MUAV drones to enhance ISR capabilities

By Defence Industry Europe

South Korea has started production of medium-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles (MUAVs) to strengthen its military surveillance over North Korea, the state-run Defence Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced on Thursday. The move marks a significant step in the nation’s efforts to enhance reconnaissance capabilities in response to regional security concerns.

The initiative follows a 471.7 billion-won contract signed in December between DAPA and a consortium of firms, including Korean Air, South Korea’s largest airline, alongside defence companies LIG Nex1 and Hanwha Systems. The agreement outlines plans to manufacture and deliver advanced spy drones by 2028.

The MUAV project was launched by the state-run Agency for Defense Development in 2008, with development successfully completed in 2022. Designed to operate at altitudes between 10 and 12 kilometres, the aircraft is capable of capturing high-resolution images from distances exceeding 100 kilometres.

Key specifications include a length of 13 metres, a height of 3 metres, and an impressive wingspan of 25 metres, enabling extended endurance and precision. According to DAPA, “The spy drone is expected to help the South Korean military’s surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.”

The introduction of these advanced unmanned systems is expected to bolster South Korea’s ability to monitor developments across the heavily fortified border with North Korea. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, the military aims to enhance situational awareness and respond swiftly to potential threats.
