Meteor is an advanced missile system designed for long-range aerial combat and is compatible with the JAS 39 Gripen C/D and E variants. The latest procurement aims to enhance Sweden’s air defence capability both domestically and as part of NATO operations.
“This additional acquisition of Meteor is a step towards further strengthening the Swedish Armed Forces’ air defence capability, both nationally and within NATO,” said Martin Anderberg, Head of Combat Aircraft Systems at FMV. The order marks the third additional procurement of the Meteor system by FMV for the Swedish Armed Forces.
The JAS 39 Gripen is equipped with the Meteor long-range radar-guided missile, developed through a collaborative effort between Sweden, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. Since entering operational service in Sweden in 2016, the missile has been integrated into the Gripen, Rafale, and Eurofighter aircraft platforms.
The new missiles were procured within a short timeframe due to effective cooperation between FMV, British authorities, and the manufacturer MBDA UK. Delivery of the missiles is scheduled for 2025.
The Meteor missile integrates seamlessly with an aircraft’s sensors and support systems to detect and engage hostile aircraft. It is powered by a ramjet engine, which provides significantly greater range and a larger no-escape zone compared to traditional rocket-powered missiles.
The missile’s ramjet propulsion allows it to maintain high energy throughout its flight, making it more difficult for enemy aircraft to evade than conventional rocket-powered missiles. This capability ensures superior performance in modern air combat scenarios.
