Sweden successfully launches its first military test satellite to enhance defence capabilities

By Defence Industry Europe

The Swedish Armed Forces announced on 31 January 2025 that Sweden had successfully launched its first military satellite as part of a trial and test project. The satellite was sent into orbit on 16 August 2024 and marks a significant step in Sweden’s efforts to develop its defence space capabilities.

The project, known as GNA 3, is a test satellite designed to improve military communication and enhance Sweden’s technological expertise in space operations. It will provide critical insights for integrating advanced platforms into future defence strategies, including multinational and joint military operations.

The satellite was launched aboard a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket as part of the Transporter-11 mission. The launch took place from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA, alongside several other satellites.

The Swedish Air Force Staff is responsible for developing the country’s military space capabilities, under the leadership of the Air Force Commander. The Swedish Armed Forces’ Joint Space Division plays a central role in coordinating Sweden’s expanding presence in the space domain.

This project is being carried out in collaboration with the Swedish Space Corporation, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration. The satellite is expected to remain operational for at least five years, supporting Sweden’s growing defence infrastructure in space.
