Swedish Air Force deploys Gripen fighter jets to intercept Russian bombers

The Swedish Air Force demonstrated its readiness and capability on Tuesday as two Jas 39 Gripen fighter jets intercepted Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea.

 

The Gripens visually identified two Russian Tu-22 Backfire bombers and their Su-27 Flanker escorts, ensuring the security of international airspace east of Gotland.

The incident showcased the critical role of Sweden’s advanced Gripen fighter jets in regional air defence.

Known for their agility and cutting-edge technology, the Gripens seamlessly took over interception duties from Finnish F-18 Hornets and Dutch F-35 Lightning II jets, part of NATO’s Air Policing mission.

The operation highlighted the seamless collaboration between Sweden and its NATO partners, as well as the Gripen’s role as a vital asset in maintaining airspace security.
