Dutch Minister of Defence Minister Kajsa Ollongren highlighted the urgent need for collective European action, noting that the Netherlands has already identified potential partners who can provide essential PATRIOT parts and munitions. Ollongren emphasized the critical nature of the situation, stating, “We are engaged in talks with partners to compile a PATRIOT system, including training for Ukrainian crews. With our offer, and consulting with partner countries providing several key parts and munitions, we can provide Ukraine with at least one fully operational system in a short time frame.”
Recognizing the scarcity of PATRIOT systems, the Dutch government underscored the broader implications of Ukraine’s struggle, describing it as a defence of Europe’s own security. Daily attacks on Ukraine’s warfighting capability, energy production, and vital infrastructure were cited as pressing reasons for this initiative.
“The NATO Secretary General recently said that as NATO countries, we can temporarily move below the alliance’s capability targets. So the room for creativity is there. Industrial suppliers have pledged to speed up production and delivery of replacement systems. We are counting on that,” Ollongren added, stressing the urgency and necessity of the operation.
The Netherlands aims to have the PATRIOT system operational in Ukraine as soon as possible, showcasing a proactive stance in support of Ukraine amidst ongoing conflicts. This initiative not only represents a significant step in European solidarity but also a commitment to reinforcing Ukraine’s defence in the face of relentless aggression.
