Saab has received an order from the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence for the Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon system, sights, ammunition and training.

This order continues Saab’s longstanding relationship with the UK, and follows the recent UK contract for Saab’s NLAW anti-tank weapon.

“Our strong relationship with the British Army is built upon delivering proven capabilities that help them to meet the threats they face and the Carl-Gustaf M4, like NLAW, is in prime position to do this. This weapon system will undoubtedly play a key role in infantry operations for the British customer, as it does for many countries around the world,” said Dean Rosenfield, Group Managing Director, Saab UK.

The Carl-Gustaf recoilless rifle is a portable, multi-role weapon system that allows dismounted soldiers to effectively deal with multiple challenges on the modern battlefield. Adaptable and flexible, it is constantly evolving to satisfy future user needs and offers a range of 84mm calibre munitions for a wide range of purposes.

British Army’s Director of Futures, Major General James Bowder, said:
“The procurement of Carl-Gustaf M4 will provide a versatile, potent, and proven capability to our close combat forces; it will defeat a range of threats on the modern battlefield, further enhancing our lethality”

The Carl-Gustaf was first adopted by the British Army towards the end of the 1960s in its M2 variant, referred to in the UK as Mark 2, as an infantry anti-tank capability. To date, Saab has sold Carl-Gustaf M4 to 11 NATO countries.
