United States approves potential USD 2 billion sale of MQ-9B drones to Qatar

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. Department of State has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale request from Qatar for General Atomics MQ-9B SkyGuardian unmanned combat aerial vehicles. The deal, if finalised, could be worth up to $2 billion, including aircraft, armaments, and support systems.

The approved package includes eight MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, along with a significant array of weapons and equipment. This includes 200 KMU-572 guidance kits for converting standard gravity bombs into GBU-38 JDAM or GBU-54 LJDAM precision munitions, and 300 BLU-111 bombs.

Also included are 100 kits for converting Mk 82 bombs into GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided bombs, 28 EGPS/INS navigation modules, 10 AN/APY-8 Lynx radar systems, and 110 AGM-114R2 Hellfire anti-tank missiles. The order additionally comprises spare parts, diagnostics, onboard systems, and ground support equipment.

Should the agreement proceed, delivery and integration would be handled by the original manufacturers of the respective components. General Atomics would be the lead contractor for the MQ-9B airframes.

Qatar continues to expand its military capabilities, with a strong focus on advanced air power. Its current air fleet includes a mix of modern multirole combat aircraft from both European and American suppliers.

The MQ-9B drones are expected to complement Qatar’s manned aircraft fleet and growing number of helicopters. Their capabilities will provide enhanced reconnaissance, strike, and support roles across a variety of missions.
