USS Zumwalt successfully undocked at HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding, progressing towards fleet return

By Defence Industry Europe

HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division has successfully undocked the USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000), the lead vessel of the U.S. Navy’s Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyers. This milestone brings the ship closer to testing and eventual reintegration into the U.S. Navy fleet.

The undocking follows extensive modernization efforts at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, where the ship has been undergoing upgrades since its arrival in August 2023. Among the key upgrades was the integration of the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) weapon system and the replacement of the ship’s twin 155mm Advanced Gun Systems with advanced missile tubes.

“In partnership with the Navy, we are steadfast in our commitment to complete this complex work that adds significant hypersonic capability to Zumwalt,” said HII President and CEO Chris Kastner. “We are proud to support the incorporation of the conventional prompt strike for the Navy.”

The Zumwalt-class destroyers boast a cutting-edge electric propulsion system, a wave-piercing tumblehome hull, and advanced stealth design. These features, combined with the latest warfighting technology, enable the ships to perform missions ranging from deterrence and sea control to command and control operations.
