Rheinmetall is the prime contractor for the Bundeswehr’s Infanterist der Zukunft, or Infantryman of the Future, programme. The order builds on the companies’ existing partnership and expands the use of Safran’s portable optronic equipment within the German soldier system.
The systems are intended to help infantry personnel assess their surroundings, detect and identify targets, and share battlefield information rapidly. Their combination of observation, location and digital reporting functions is designed to support faster tactical decisions in the field.
MOSKITO combines day and night vision, laser range-finding and precise target geolocation in a compact, lightweight device. Safran said the system can detect, identify and locate targets across a wide range of operating environments.
SHARPCROW is a handheld system combining thermal imaging, low-light imaging and a direct optical daylight channel. It also provides target-location and digital reporting functions intended to improve situational awareness.

The Infanterist der Zukunft programme is the Bundeswehr’s principal effort to modernise its infantry equipment. It is designed to improve effectiveness, survivability, command and control, mobility and endurance through digitally connected capabilities.
