Brazilian Army selects Israeli ATMOS 155mm howitzers for artillery upgrade

By Defence Industry Europe

The Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO) has started negotiations with Israeli defence industry company Elbit Systems regarding the purchase of 8x8 ATMOS 155 mm self-propelled howitzers and PULS Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS). By purchasing the Israeli weapons systems, the Danish Ministry of Defence intends to fill the gap in artillery systems after the decision to donate the CAESAR howitzers to Ukraine.

The Brazilian Army's Logistics Command has selected the winning bid for its self-propelled 155mm howitzers as part of the VBCOAP 155mm SR program. The chosen artillery system is the Israeli ATMOS offered by Elbit Systems Land, which will be mounted on Czech Tatra T815 6x6 trucks.

According to an official statement, the Israeli system met all the requirements set by the Exército Brasileiro.

It surpassed three other bids in the program: the Slovakian Zuzana 2 from Excalibur International, which came second; the French CAESAR from KNDS France, in third place; and the Chinese SH15 from Norinco, which finished fourth.

The VBCOAP 155 mm SR program plans to purchase 36 artillery systems for Brazilian Army.

According to the schedule, a contract for the first two howitzers will be signed on May 7th.

These units will be used for technical and operational evaluation and are expected to be delivered within 12 months of the signing. Following successful trials, the remaining 34 systems will be ordered and delivered in stages by 2034.
