European defence industry to boost production of Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles

By Defence Industry Europe

MBDA, a European leader in missile technology, has taken a significant step forward in air defence with the successful first firing of the Aster B1NT (New Technology) interceptor. The test took place on 8th October 2024 at the Biscarrosse DGA missile testing facility in France and was conducted by the French General Directorate of Armaments (DGA). The event was attended by key figures, including French Minister of Armed Forces and Veteran Affairs Sébastien Lecornu, alongside representatives from France, Italy, and the UK, who are involved in the Principal Anti Air Missile Systems (PAAMS) cooperation.

The Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) has signed Amendment 15 to the FSAF-PAAMS Sustainment & Enhancement (S&E) Contract, increasing and accelerating the production of Aster missiles. The agreement, signed by OCCAR-EA Director Joachim Sucker and Eurosam Managing Director Anne Diaz De Tuesta, aims to enhance European production capacity for ground and naval air defence systems used by France, Italy, and the UK.

The contract amendment will enable Eurosam and its partner MBDA to deliver the Aster 15 and Aster 30 missile variants to the three nations within a shorter timeframe. These advanced air defence systems are vital for the French and Italian Air Forces, the Italian Army, and the naval forces of France, Italy, and the UK.

OCCAR has worked closely with national defence procurement agencies, including the Italian Secretariat General of Defence (SGD), the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA), and the UK Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S). This collaboration reinforces defence cooperation among the three countries, strengthening their collective air defence capabilities.

The amendment is a significant step in response to the evolving geopolitical landscape, ensuring that European forces are better equipped to counter emerging threats. OCCAR remains committed to enhancing joint defence efforts by modernising air defence systems and maintaining operational readiness.
