The ‘Basic Contractual Instrument’ signed in July 2025 sets out the terms, conditions and technical specifications for multiple types of 120mm tank ammunition. NATO and NATO-equivalent members can use the framework agreement to simplify procurement by placing orders directly with NSPA, a move Rheinmetall says significantly streamlines the acquisition of 120mm ammunition within the Alliance.
Rheinmetall’s 120mm smoothbore technology, in operational use since 1980, has become the established main battle tank armament for Germany, NATO and allied armed forces worldwide. The system serves as the standard armament on the Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams main battle tanks, and the company says that, due to their superior performance and remaining power reserves, it can continue to offer innovative and threat-appropriate technical solutions in the 120mm calibre in the medium term.
