The new capability combines the A-29 platform with Valkyrie’s proprietary Gunslinger AI suite. The system supports real-time tactical decision-making in counter-drone operations and is designed to assist with the “Find, Fix, Finish” process when engaging unmanned threats.
According to the companies, the Gunslinger system has been developed to address the evolving threat posed by unmanned aerial systems. Integrated with the Super Tucano’s current sensor suite, it is intended to strengthen the aircraft’s existing counter-UAS capabilities.
Militaries worldwide have invested significant resources to respond to persistent and disruptive drone threats. In many cases, high-end platforms such as fighter jets have been tasked with these missions, resulting in a high operational cost per engagement.
The A-29 equipped with the Gunslinger system is designed to offer a more cost-effective approach to counter-drone operations. The aircraft’s tandem cockpit, extended loiter time and agility allow it to operate effectively against smaller unmanned targets.
Its flight characteristics also allow it to safely match the speed of one-way attack drones. This creates a stable and precise engagement platform for guns, guided rockets and other effectors.
Marcio Monteiro, Market Intelligence Vice-President of Embraer Defense & Security, said: “We are proud to partner with Valkyrie to further enhance the A-29 C-UAS mission capabilities. With over 60,000 combat flight hours, the A-29 Super Tucano is the gold standard for light attack globally, and the ideal platform for manned C-UAS operations.”
Chris Turner, Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategy of Valkyrie Aero, added: “Valkyrie is excited to partner with Embraer to deliver Gunslinger on the A-29 platform for customers worldwide. Gunslinger is born from the immediate needs of the frontline warfighter, whom Valkyrie trains and engages with every day.”
