Austria selects Leonardo M-346FA jets to replace retired Saab 105 fleet and strengthen air force

By Defence Industry Europe

The Austrian Ministry of Defence has confirmed plans to acquire 12 Leonardo M-346FA jets, marking a significant step in modernising the nation’s air force and addressing a critical capability gap. The decision, based on recommendations from Austria’s General Staff, was announced by Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner, who highlighted the benefits of the jets for both training and operational purposes.

The planned government-to-government agreement with Italy includes the M-346FA variant, which combines advanced training capabilities with combat readiness. These jets will serve dual roles: training Austrian pilots domestically and enhancing airspace defence. In the latter capacity, they will complement Austria’s fleet of Eurofighter Typhoons, ensuring a comprehensive defence strategy.

The funding for this acquisition was secured as part of Austria’s “ÖBH 2032+” development plan and the 2022 multi-year financial framework. Ongoing negotiations include provisions to strengthen Austria’s economy through industrial partnerships and logistical collaborations with Italy, reducing operational costs while fostering bilateral ties.

Chancellor Karl Nehammer praised the agreement as a testament to the strong friendship between Austria and Italy. He extended particular gratitude to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for her support in facilitating the deal. Defence Minister Tanner underscored the strategic importance of the M-346FA, stating that the jets would allow Austria to conduct 100% of pilot training domestically while bolstering national security and neutrality.

This procurement decision also reflects the growing global interest in the M-346 platform. Leonardo has delivered or secured orders for over 100 M-346 jets, which are used by nations across Europe, Africa, and Asia. Notably, Nigeria recently ordered 24 M-346FAs, and Turkmenistan has received six. Italy itself plans to acquire 20 additional jets, and marketing efforts are underway in Brazil, where potential orders for up to 30 aircraft are being discussed.

The M-346FA’s selection signals Austria’s intent to modernise its air force with a cost-effective and versatile solution. The jets are expected to bring long-term benefits to the Linz-Hörsching airbase, strengthening its military importance and safeguarding high-quality jobs. Upper Austria Governor Thomas Stelzer described the decision as a positive start to 2025 and a boost to regional and national defence capabilities.
