BAE Systems, Leonardo, and JAIEC form joint venture for Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP)

By Defence Industry Europe

BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co Ltd (JAIEC) have agreed to establish a new joint venture company to advance the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), pending regulatory approvals. The partnership builds on trilateral cooperation between the UK, Japan, and Italy since the programme's inception in December 2022.

The new company will lead the design, development, and delivery of next-generation combat aircraft. It will also hold the position of design authority for the GCAP project throughout the product’s lifespan, expected to extend beyond 2070.

Each partner company will hold an equal 33.3% stake in the venture, combining their expertise and resources to achieve the programme’s goals. This collaboration is seen as a milestone for international aerospace and defence, reflecting a shared commitment to innovation and security.

Charles Woodburn, Chief Executive of BAE Systems, described the agreement as the culmination of months of collaboration. He said, “The new business will bring together the significant strengths and expertise of the companies involved to create an innovative organisation…creating long-term, high-value and skilled jobs across the partner nations for decades to come.”

Roberto Cingolani, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Leonardo, highlighted the importance of the partnership in advancing global security and innovation. “Today, we are paving the way for the development of a new era in Aircraft Systems and Multi-domain scenarios, fostering long-term sustainable growth for the economies of the involved countries,” he stated.

Kimito Nakae, President of JAIEC, emphasised the strength of trilateral collaboration. “Through continuing the strong spirit of trilateral cooperation…we will not only deliver the GCAP on time but also at a level that exceeds all of our expectations,” he noted.

The joint venture will have operations across the UK, Japan, and Italy, with its headquarters based in the UK. This location aligns the venture closely with the GCAP International Government Organisation (GIGO), also headquartered in the UK, to support efficient and timely programme delivery, including the planned 2035 in-service date for the aircraft.
