BAE Systems has received a U.S. Army contract worth more than $535.6 million for additional M109A7 155 mm self-propelled howitzers. The agreement also covers support vehicles and additional equipment for the artillery system.

The fixed-price contract was awarded to BAE Systems Land and Armaments L.P. of York, Pennsylvania, and was designated W912CH-26-F-0056. Offers were collected online, and one bid was received.

The place of performance and funding will be determined separately with each order under the contract. The agreement is valid through 31 December 2029.

The U.S. Army Contracting Command at Detroit Arsenal, Michigan, represented the Army in the procurement. The contract continues the service’s acquisition of the latest production version of the long-running M109 self-propelled howitzer family.

The M109A7 is a deeply modernised version of the M109A6. It uses a new chassis incorporating components from the Bradley Fighting Vehicle family, including the power-pack and elements of the running gear.

The variant also includes a new onboard power network, electric turret drives and other modifications. These changes are intended to reduce operating costs while improving the effectiveness of the artillery system.

A unified version of the M992 armoured ammunition carrier, designated M992A3, was developed in parallel with the M109A7. These vehicles are likely to be the support vehicles referenced in the contract announcement.

The additional equipment mentioned in the contract likely includes spare parts, specialised tools and other items required by the U.S. Army to maintain the M109A7 and M992A3 fleet. The package is intended to support continued readiness of the artillery systems after delivery.
