BAE Systems to supply Bofors 40 Mk4 naval gun for Colombian SIGMA-class frigate

By Defence Industry Europe

BAE Systems has secured a contract with Damen Naval to supply a Bofors 40 Mk4 naval gun system for the Colombian Navy. The advanced gun will be installed on the PES frigate, a Damen Naval SIGMA-class vessel, enhancing its anti-aircraft and anti-surface capabilities.

Colombia becomes the second Latin American nation to adopt this versatile naval weapon, following Brazil’s decision to standardise the Bofors 40 Mk4 for its small- to medium-sized vessels. Since its introduction in 2015, more than 70 of these systems have been sold to eight countries worldwide.

Stefan Löfström, marketing and sales director at BAE Systems Bofors, emphasised the company’s commitment to providing advanced defence solutions in Latin America. He stated that the naval gun offers cutting-edge firepower and rapid response capabilities essential for the Colombian Navy’s operational needs.

The Bofors 40 Mk4 is a compact and lightweight system designed for multi-target warfare. Its ability to seamlessly switch between different ammunition types enhances its effectiveness against aerial, surface, and land-based threats. The programmable Bofors 3P ammunition further increases combat flexibility with six function modes, optimising its performance in diverse combat situations.

Damen Naval expressed confidence in the selection of the Bofors 40 Mk4, highlighting its role in strengthening the combat effectiveness of the SIGMA 10514-based PES frigate. Jasper Oreel, Damen Naval Project Director, welcomed the new collaboration with BAE Systems Bofors and expressed optimism about further strengthening their business relationship.
