The partnership combines Bittium’s experience in resilient tactical communications, secure mobile communications and software-defined radio with Safran’s capabilities in integrated soldier systems, optronics and avionics. Bittium has 40 years of experience serving defence forces in Europe and beyond, while Safran has decades of experience supplying the French Army and allied forces.
The companies will examine cooperation in ground-based air defence networking, counter-drone communications and communications for unmanned systems. Other areas under consideration include mission networking, dismounted soldier radios and secure communications.
Bittium and Safran said the identified areas reflect growing requirements for reliable and protected connectivity between sensors, platforms and command structures. The memorandum is intended to determine how their respective technologies could be combined to address the evolving communications needs of the French Armed Forces.

The agreement will remain in force for two years while the companies evaluate the potential for deeper cooperation. That work may include joint development, production and commercialisation of tactical communications solutions in France.
