TKMS and Finkl Steel – Sorel have signed a teaming agreement to explore cooperation on strategic materials for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project. The agreement establishes a framework to assess joint activities related to the production of specialised stainless steel for future submarine platforms.

The collaboration focuses on the potential melting and production of naval-grade stainless steel material required for modern submarines. It aims to combine TKMS’s submarine design expertise with Finkl Steel – Sorel’s metallurgical capabilities to support Canada’s industrial base for naval programmes.

Under the agreement, the companies will jointly explore and develop processes for producing specialised stainless steel grade 1.3964. This material is intended for use in the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project, which is designed to enhance Canada’s future submarine capabilities.

“Canada’s submarine program represents an important opportunity to combine world-class naval engineering with strong local industrial participation,” said Thomas Keupp. “Through this agreement with Finkl Steel – Sorel, we are exploring how advanced Canadian metallurgical capabilities can contribute to the production of critical materials required for modern submarine platforms. TKMS values partnerships that strengthen domestic supply chains while meeting the highest international naval standards.”

As part of the cooperation, Finkl Steel – Sorel may seek qualification to produce the specialised material in line with international naval standards. These include requirements set by the German Institute for Defence Materials and Production Technology, Det Norske Veritas, and German naval construction regulations.

“The Canadian Patrol Submarine Project is a defining initiative for Canada’s long-term security and industrial resilience,” said Louis-Philippe Lapierre-Boire. “Finkl Steel – Sorel is proud to work alongside TKMS to help establish a strong, future-ready Canadian industrial foundation for this program. Our capabilities in advanced steel forging, metallurgical engineering, and complex component manufacturing position us as a strategic partner in supporting high-performance naval platforms. Beyond the platform itself, this partnership is about building sustainable expertise, reinforcing Canada’s defence supply chain, and creating enduring economic impact. We look forward to contributing to a program that will serve Canada for decades to come.”

The agreement also provides for the exchange of technical data related to material specifications, certification requirements and Canadian regulatory considerations. Both companies said they will explore opportunities to maximise Canadian industrial participation and long-term value within the programme.
