The programme, known in Greece as Achilles Shield, is also one of the largest defence procurements undertaken by Athens. It will provide a multilayer capability against ballistic missiles, other aerial threats and hostile unmanned aircraft.
Israeli Ministry of Defence Director General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram and his Greek counterpart, Ioannis Bouras, signed the agreement on Monday at the ministry’s headquarters. The network will use Israeli-made systems and an architecture drawing on operational experience gained during the war.
The agreement includes the David’s Sling system, developed through the Israeli Missile Defense Organization with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems as prime contractor. Israel Aerospace Industries will supply its Barak MX system, while Rafael will provide Spyder.
ELTA Systems, an Israel Aerospace Industries subsidiary, will deliver MMR multi-mission radars for air surveillance. Rafael will also develop a national command-and-control system to integrate the different sensors and interceptors into a single defensive network.
The contract marks the first time the Israeli Ministry of Defence will supply a complete air-defence array covering such a broad range of threats. The project brings Rafael and Israel Aerospace Industries systems together under a common national architecture for Greece.
A separate €26 million agreement signed during the meeting covers Rafael’s Drone Dome counter-unmanned aircraft systems. The equipment will be used to protect strategic sites and reinforce Greece’s existing defences against drones.
