Czech Air Force to continue protecting Slovak airspace with Gripen fighters

By Defence Industry Europe

In a demonstration of regional solidarity, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding Slovak airspace. On 11 December 2024, Czech Defence Minister Jana Černochová and Slovak Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák signed a bilateral declaration extending the Czech Air Force's mission into 2025.

The agreement is set against the backdrop of heightened security concerns in the region. It ensures that the Czech Air Force will continue its operations to protect Slovakia’s airspace until Slovakia achieves full capability to handle this task independently. Minister Černochová emphasised, “The security of our allies is our security too. The Czech Republic remains ready to fulfil its commitments.”

This extended mission forms part of NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS), which oversees coordinated air policing among member states. The Czech Republic will deploy its Gripen fighter aircraft, providing rapid-response capabilities to address any airspace violations. Slovakia, in turn, will fulfil its host-nation support duties, offering logistical assistance such as refuelling, air navigation services, and asset protection when necessary.

The Czech Air Force has been actively protecting Slovak skies since September 2022, following Slovakia’s decision to retire its MiG-29 fighter jets early. Initially joined by Poland, and later by Hungary in 2023, this joint effort has ensured robust air policing over Slovakia. The current mission, set to conclude at the end of 2024, will now transition seamlessly into the new agreement.

Slovakia’s ability to conduct its own air policing remains limited despite progress in acquiring modern F-16 fighter jets. While the country has received two of the 14 aircraft on order, with a third expected by the end of this year, this fleet is not yet sufficient to assume full operational responsibility. Minister Kaliňák noted, “We greatly appreciate the Czech Republic’s ongoing support and look forward to reciprocating this solidarity in the future if necessary.”

This agreement also reaffirms Slovakia’s readiness to assist the Czech Republic should similar support be required. The bilateral declaration represents not only a commitment to regional security but also a testament to the enduring partnership between the two nations.
