The procurement process is divided into two categories: long-range air defence systems and short- to medium-range systems. The shortlisted suppliers have now been invited to submit bids, detailing costs, personnel requirements, maintenance expenses, and support packages.
For long-range air defence, Denmark is considering two competing solutions. The first is the American Patriot system, which could be acquired through the U.S. government, while the second is the SAMP/T NG system, developed by the European defence consortium Eurosam.
For short- to medium-range defence, four systems are under consideration. These include Norway’s NASAMS system (Kongsberg), Germany’s IRIS-T SLM (Diehl Defence), and France’s VL MICA (MBDA). Additionally, Denmark is evaluating the IFPC system from the United States as a potential option.
The selection process is based on several critical factors. These include NATO interoperability, security of supply, operational effectiveness, and delivery timelines. At this stage, suppliers must provide detailed information to facilitate DALO’s assessment.
Denmark plans to finalise its decision and sign contracts by the end of 2025, with full operational deployment expected by 2028. In the interim, the Danish government is exploring options for leasing or purchasing temporary air defence capabilities between 2025 and 2026.
The Danish push for enhanced air defence stems from its commitment to meeting NATO’s multi-layered air defence requirements. Currently, Denmark’s ground-based air defence is limited to very short-range FIM-92 Stinger systems.
Future plans include the introduction of Skyranger 30 mobile air defence systems, mounted on Piranha V armoured vehicles, as part of Denmark’s participation in the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI). These systems are expected to improve short-range protection.
The core of Denmark’s air defence strategy remains its Air Force and Navy. The Royal Danish Air Force operates F-16 fighter jets, with F-35 aircraft gradually replacing them. Meanwhile, the Royal Danish Navy fields five frigates armed with RIM-162 ESSM and SM-2 Block IIIA missiles for medium- and long-range air defence.
