The vehicles, identified as the Volvo 44R and 66R models, are equipped with advanced features, including modern safety systems and driver assistance technology. These capabilities enhance reliability, ensure safety, and simplify maintenance, making the vehicles well-suited to both military and civilian logistical standards.
According to Erko Sepri, Strategic Category Manager at the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI), the addition of these vehicles represents a strategic improvement in the EDF’s mobility and readiness. Major Raigo Puusepp, Chief Technician of the EDF, noted that the current fleet, which has been in service for nearly five decades, requires replacement to meet modern operational demands.
The procurement also supports wider institutional needs. Under a framework agreement, vehicles will be provided not only to the EDF but also to the Defence League, the Police and Border Guard Board, and organisations under Latvia’s Ministry of Defence. Additional suppliers include Scania Eesti and Veho Eesti, contributing to a broader upgrade of logistical and tactical vehicle fleets.
The replacement of ageing vehicles is expected to improve technical reliability and operational efficiency across key units. The new vehicles are set to be introduced over the course of the next year.
