Europe’s defence and aviation industries welcome supportive EU Draghi report

By Defence Industry Europe

The Aerospace, Security, and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) has expressed approval of the latest European Union report led by Mario Draghi, highlighting its alignment with the strategic needs of Europe’s defence and aviation sectors. The report is seen as a positive step towards strengthening the continent's defence readiness and supporting the ambitious goals of the aviation sector, including the challenging path towards net-zero emissions by 2050.

The Draghi report acknowledges the critical role of Europe’s defence industry in bolstering the region’s security and readiness. It emphasizes the importance of European procurement from domestic manufacturers and advocates for increased strategic investment at the EU level in innovation, production capacity, and improved access to financing. These measures are intended to ensure Europe’s defence sector remains robust and competitive in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

ASD particularly welcomed the report’s focus on the aviation sector’s net-zero emissions target, known as Destination 2050. Given the complexities of decarbonising aviation, the report recommends that the EU develop a suite of tools to support this transformation. Key proposals include expanding existing funding mechanisms, reducing investment risks in sustainable and low-carbon fuels, and building a robust supply chain for alternative fuels. The report also highlights the need to address the cost disparity between sustainable fuels and conventional options.

The report further calls for a reduction in administrative and regulatory burdens, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This includes simplifying the sustainability reporting framework and creating an environment conducive to investment, innovation, and industrial growth. Lower energy costs and streamlined regulations are seen as essential to maintaining Europe’s competitive edge in technological advancements and in meeting the continent’s security and decarbonisation goals.

The ASD underscores the importance of the upcoming five-year mandate of the European Parliament and Commission, spanning from 2024 to 2029, as a crucial period for reinforcing Europe’s sovereignty and security. The period is also seen as vital for Europe to lead the way in the green and digital transitions.

ASD urges that EU policies continue to support European industries, enabling them to contribute fully to a strong, safe, and sustainable Europe. By doing so, these industries can play a pivotal role as key enablers in achieving Europe’s broader strategic ambitions.
