The vessel is designed for missions ranging from maritime patrol and sea rescue to civil protection and first-line combat operations. Its combat-system options range from a “soft” patrol configuration with self-defence capability to a “full” version equipped for comprehensive defence.
Domenico Millelire is 143 metres long, can exceed 31 knots and accommodates a crew of 171. Its propulsion system combines diesel engines and a gas turbine in a CODAG arrangement with electric propulsion.
The ship can operate rigid-hulled inflatable boats measuring up to 11 metres through side-mounted cranes or a hauling ramp at the stern. It can also supply drinking water ashore, extending its utility during civil-protection operations.
The delivery ceremony was attended by Admiral Aurelio De Carolis, Commander-in-Chief of the Naval Fleet; Chief Inspector Admiral Cristiano Nervi, Director of NAVARM; and Joachim Sucker, Director of OCCAR. They were welcomed by Fincantieri chairman Biagio Mazzotta, chief executive and managing director Pierroberto Folgiero, and Naval Vessels Division general manager Eugenio Santagata.
