The upgraded Alpha Block II configuration is designed to improve manufacturability, reliability and production rates while supporting a higher flight cadence. Firefly said the vehicle is intended to address demand for dedicated launch services in the 1,000-kilogram payload class.
“This extension reflects Firefly’s continued support to Lockheed Martin and their critical missions anchored by our Block II configuration, which is the next evolution of our launch capabilities,” said Jason Kim, CEO of Firefly Aerospace. “As we upgrade to Alpha Block II, we’re increasing the manufacturability, reliability, and responsiveness of our rockets to support a higher flight rate and provide assured access to space when our customers need it most.”
“This upgraded configuration allows us to increase Alpha’s production rate and fills a void at a time when launch options are in high demand, but payload capacity is scarce and launch site diversity is limited.” Firefly said customers are seeking greater control over launch schedules and direct delivery of spacecraft to selected orbits.
Alpha Block II is also being developed to expand Firefly’s deployable launch capabilities for tactically responsive space missions and hypersonic testing. The company plans to use the upgraded configuration for national security missions and commercial satellite launches for U.S. and international customers.
Firefly and Lockheed Martin are also working with Seagate Space on sea-based launch solutions for national security missions. The companies are developing mission concepts and flight-demonstration projects using Seagate’s Gateway offshore launch platform.
The companies plan to combine the offshore platform with Firefly’s Alpha launch vehicle to provide access to space from a wider range of locations. Firefly said the concept is designed to support rapid and flexible launch operations for evolving military requirements.
